PBS - The Mormons
I have no pictures to post, but I did want to write about the experience of watching the PBS Frontline documentary, THE MORMONS. We watched both of the two hour episodes. Scott and I thought they spent way to much time on the Mountain Meadow Massacre and whether Brigham Young ordered it done. Then, of course, it is always a source of interest in how others try to explain why Joseph Smith had the revelation about plural marriage. One of the comments was made was that he had a "wandering eye" for the ladies. When I got to school, the teacher I work with had watched it and asked me about that. It gave me an opportunity to bear my testimony of the fact that I know Joseph Smith is a prophet and that he did receive revelation and that he in fact saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and that I have received a confirmation of this through prayer. Did anyone else watch this documentary and do any of you have an opinion about any of it?

I would agree with your assessment about wayyy too much time spent on the very inaccurate account of the mtn massacre and polygamy and particularly the FLDS. I thought the 2nd night was a little better but it bugged me how much time the excommunicated people were given compared to actual members or even objective historians. I hated the portrayal of LDS women as subserviant to men, but that is old hat. I loved the black lady and her comments about her conversion and her view on eternal families even though she hated her family. I thought it was hilarious how they had the ex-member-missionary try to tell that we put our missionaries in harms way. I had some dangerous moments on my mission but it was no different than anyone else in that area at that time. If anything I was more protected because I was a missionary.
The most important thing about this show is what happened to Mom, a chance for people to think about the church and hopefully stir some questions and provide missionary opportunities. Thanks Mom for your example!
I taped the documentary, then watched it while flopped on the couch in strange positions. I actually fell asleep during the Mountain Meadows Massacre--way too long and boring! Maybe I missed something, but I doubt it.
I loved the black lady, too. She was great. Gospel music in an LDS church building? I want to be part of that!
Good for you, Catherine, on being able to share your testimony at work. I might never get that opportunity, since I only have my bedroom walls to communicate with during work. (Wish I could have visited with you while you were here).
Not a real accurate view of Mormons, but then, do we get accurate views of other religions through the same medium?
